CAN: Japadog

"Making the world happy and alive through hot dogs!"

Owned by Noriki Tamura and his wife who moved from Japan to Vancouver, Canada in 2005, Japadog had its humble beginning as a roadside stand specialising in hot dogs with Japanese flavours. Fast forward to now, there are multiple hot dog carts and a store in Metro Vancouver.

My BFF and I went to the store at Robson Street so that we could sit down and enjoy our meal.

Kurobuta Terimayo Hot Dog C$7.59 (~S$7.90)
Taste: 8/10

How did Japadog's signature hot dog fare? To me, the black pork sausage was delightfully springy and moist. It was topped with a generous amount of seaweed and mayonnaise mixed with sweet teriyaki sauce typically made of soy sauce, rice wine and sugar. The hot dog bun was fluffy enough.

Yakiniku Rice Hot Dog C$6.75 (~S$7.00)
Taste: 7/10

We had a hard time choosing the other flavour, but eventually decided on a mix of stir-fried beef and rice, though there wasn't much of the latter. While the beef slices were pretty tender, they could be less sweet. The arabiki (lit. coursely-ground) pork sausage was smaller than its black pork counterpart, but it was flavourful as well.

Special Combo C$4.45 (~S$4.65)
Butter and Shoyu Shaked FriesTaste: 7.5/10

With every purchase of a hot dog, you can choose to upgrade it to a combo to get medium-sized shaked fries and a soft drink. I decided to upgrade mine and share with my BFF. We went for the most popular flavour for the shaked fries, which was nicely sweet and savoury, but not as buttery as expected.

Age Ice (Black Sesame) C$2.99 (~S$3.10)
Taste: 8/10

Last but not least, we had half a hot dog bun that was deep-fried to perfection before being topped with a scoop of ice cream. Our choice was the black sesame flavour, which wasn't as rich as expected, but had the right degree of sweetness. As sinful as it was, the bun was truly crunchy without leaving any greasy sensation on the tongue.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 5.5/10
Overall: 6.5/10

That was one of the cheapest meals that I had in Canada. Pika's advice: Besides hot dogs, you may want to consider other items such as yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried buckwheat noodle) and takoyaki (Japanese octopus balls).
