SIN: Roo's Gastrobar

The 'greener fries': beer-battered long beans!

Roo's Gastrobar is a casual, yet chic dining place at Frankel Avenue lined with landed properties. Marketing itself as "your neighbourhood hangout", it offers a variety of food and drinks, including brunch items on weekends. There's also a pool table if you feel like challenging your buddies to a game.

It was almost empty on a Saturday afternoon, truly a peaceful place to have lunch.

Beer-Battered Long Beans S$9.00
Taste: 8/10

Beer-battered fish and chips are common, but what about beer-battered long beans? That was a first for me. Nicknamed 'the greener fries', the adequately juicy long beans were covered in enjoyably crunchy batter, but the latter could be thinner. It came with homemade aioli that was rich enough for my liking.

Classic Eggs Benedict S$18.00
Taste: 7/10

From the brunch menu, I tried the American classic of poached eggs with shaved hams on English muffins that came with a bit of salad greens and two halves of a cherry tomato. The eggs were done pretty well, though the Hollandaise sauce was a tad thin for my liking.

Slow-Cooked Chicken Roulade S$18.00
Taste: 8/10

I don't get to eat roulade that often, so I was thankful that Roo's Gastrobar did it right even though the portion was rather small. Sitting on a bed of creamy risotto, the white meat was tender. The accompanying mushroom sauce was a little bit sweet and a little bit savoury.

Panna Cotta with Berry Compote S$12.00
Taste: 7.5/10

To close the lunch, I sampled the panna cotta (lit. cooked cream) that had an adequately smooth texture. It was topped with quite a generous amount of what I guessed to be a mix of blueberry and raspberry compote, which sour profile balanced out the sweetness of the classic Italian dessert.

Big screens are available for you to watch your favourite sports matches. Pika's advice: You may be delighted to know that the eatery also offers a selection of Indian dishes.
