SIN: Tim Ho Wan [Delivery]

Could it be on par with the original?

Who doesn't know Tim Ho Wan (lit. Add Good Luck), a famous dim sum eatery chain originating from Hong Kong? It used earn the title of being the cheapest Michelin-starred eatery in the world, though I believe the title has now been claimed by Singapore's Liao Fan Hawker Chan.

Tim Ho Wan began expanding overseas in 2013 with Singapore being the first international target. Six years later, I finally tried ordering some items via delivery from the branch at CityLink Mall.

Shrimp Dumplings S$5.30
Taste: 7.5/10

It's always in my standard operating procedure to put the shrimp dumplings of any dim sum eateries into the acid test. I enjoyed the shrimps that were pretty bouncy and succulent, but the dumpling skin wasn't as chewy and stretchy as I'd like it to be.

BBQ Pork Rice Rolls S$5.50
Taste: 8/10

Judging from the looks, there was certainly enough meat inside each of the rice rolls that turned out to be delightfully chewy. Doused in soy sauce that was adequately sweet, the rice rolls were yummy. I wouldn't mind having more of the spring onions.

Baked BBQ Pork Buns S$5.80
Taste: 8/10

The baked BBQ pork buns are a must-order item. The buns were soft and milky, but I was hoping that the crust would be crispier and crumblier. The BBQ pork filling in each bun was delectably sweet and also pretty generously given.

Pork Spare Ribs, Yam and Black Bean with Rice S$6.80
Taste: 7.5/10

I appreciated the fact that the eatery gave the meatier parts of the spare ribs rather than the boney ones. Together with earthy yam cubes, they were sitting on top of rice that was cooked well. The black beans were somewhat dehydrated though.

Sesame Balls with Molten Salted Eggs S$5.30
Taste: 9/10

The sweet dish turned out to be the most satisfying of all. The balls encrusted with a mix of white and black sesame seeds were enjoyably glutinous and crispy. The salted egg filling was runny with a nice balance between the sweet and the savoury.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10

For some reason, I felt that what I had here were better than those during my visit to Tim Ho Wan in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. Anyway, Tim Ho Wan isn't really my to-go dim sum place in Hong Kong. One Dim Sum is. Pika's advice: Since the beginning of 2019, the branches in Singapore have expanded the menu to include items such as fried rice and noodles. You can now have more than the usual dim sum items.
