SIN: Maro's Place {CLOSED}

Sinful, but fantastic butter cuttlefish!

UPDATE (01/12/2019): The eatery has closed down.

Can alcoholic drinks, apart from beers, go hand in hand with Asian cuisine? Maro's Place in Boat Quay is a bar-cum-eatery serves a wide range of Asian cuisine, especially Chinese and Japanese dishes, on top of Western food. The main courses are pretty value-for-money.

Save for dessert, my friend and I decided to try the Asian dishes.

Braised Pork Rice S$9.80
Taste: 8/10

The Taiwanese main course of braised pork rice didn't disappoint as the red meat and the egg was marinated well and thus flavourful. The pork had an adequate amount of fats that sort of melted in the mouth. The yellow pickled radish and kailan (Chinese broccoli) added colours to the dish.

Signature Laksa S$9.80
Taste: 7.5/10

The laksa (Peranakan dish of noodle in rich coconut gravy) wasn't the richest I've ever had, but it was certainly decent enough. The bouncy silver needle noodles were accompanied by prawns, fried beancurd and an egg. I was hoping that the gravy would be thicker.

Butter Cuttlefish S$16.00
Taste: 9/10

The winning dish of the day was the deep-fried cuttlefish doused with melted butter that wasn't only fragrant, but also deliciously rich. Topped with curry leaves and bird's eye chilis, it was indeed a sinful dish, but I just couldn't stop myself from popping those crunchy and succulent cuttlefish pieces into my mouth.

Lava Cake S$5.50
Taste: 7.5/10

We decided to share the priciest dessert item on the list, which bears a price tag that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The small lava cake was adequately moist, though the molten chocolate could be richer and runnier for sure. The scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of it was bigger in size. Pika's advice: Not so intrigued by the fixed dessert items? Ask what's their Weekly Cake that's priced at S$2.80, which may be of your interest.

Overall: 7.5/10

Perhaps Maro is the name of the owner of the eatery.
