QAT: Shater Abbas

A trusted brand for Persian food in Qatar!

Shater Abbas is a local chain of eateries specialising in Iranian and contemporary Gulf cuisine. Having stood the test of time since 1998, there are at least ten branches at the point of writing. I dropped by the restaurant at the luxurious artificial island named The Pearl-Qatar for lunch.

Melon asked, "Persian cuisine, anyone?"

Haleem Bademjan QAR 10.00 (~S$3.70)
Taste: 7.5/10

To begin with, I tried a dip made of kashk (Middle Eastern drained yogurt) mixed with minced eggplants. Drizzled with olive oil, it had a sour taste that was pretty refreshing, going well with the big, thin flatbread provided free-of-charge.

Qima Bademjan QAR 30.00 (~S$11.15)
Taste: 8/10

The mildly spicy mutton stew with lentils and sliced roasted eggplants was delicious, although there wasn't much of the red meat. To go with it, I chose to have the so-called Green Rice. Mixed with herbs, the rice was adequately fluffy and aromatic. Pika's advice: Not interested to have it with rice? Opt for bread instead.

Hamour QAR 50.00 (~S$18.55)
Taste: 7/10

Known as brown-spotted grouper in English, the grilled hamour fillets were actually marinated well. However, the fish could be juicier and more succulent. Having said that the, the grilled onions were amazingly sweet, while the green chili peppers were pretty hot.

Banana Lassi QAR 15.00 (~S$5.60)
Taste: 7.5/10

To cut through the spiciness, I had a glass of chilled yogurt-based drink infused with bananas that managed to cool my tongue down. In my opinion, it could be slightly thicker and use more bananas for an even better taste.

It's one of the more affordable restaurants at The Pearl-Qatar.
