CAN: Tooloulou's

Slogan: "Laissez les bon temps rouler!" (lit. Let the good times roll!)

Tooloulou's is a 50-seater casual restaurant in Banff, Canada that was established in late 2012. On top of the variety of Cajun and Creole-inspired dishes it offers, the restaurant is famous for its very huge array of breakfast items. My BFF and I went there for dinner on our first day in Banff.

The Cajun word touloulou means 'fiddler crab'.

Tooloulou's Crab Cake C$8.25 (~S$8.60)
Taste: 8/10

Given the name of the restaurant, I just had to try its crab cake for appetiser. Encased in a crispy outer layer was a substantial amount of crab meat that was fresh and succulent enough for my liking.

It was served with a creamy lime dip that was pretty light. Pika's advice: Get two crab cakes at one go for a slightly cheaper price of C$15.50 (~S$16.20).

Creole Jambalaya C$24.95 (~S$26.00)
Taste: 8/10

Jambalaya is a type of Creole dirty rice, in which the white rice used gets a 'dirty' colour from being cooked with ingredients. Touloulou's version uses chicken and smoked pork sausages for the proteins, which also comes with a side of sweet cake. I enjoyed the dish as it was bursting with flavours and adequately moist.

Bayou Tooloulou's (Mahi Mahi) C$28.85 (~S$30.10)
Taste: 8/10

I didn't know that the fish dish would come with rice, which isn't stated in the description on the menu. We went for mahi mahi instead of snapper or catfish as recommended by the server. The adequately fresh and flaky fish was topped with a bit of a thick shrimp and lobster stew and accompanied by sautéed green beans.

Butter Beer C$5.95 (~S$6.20)
Taste: 8/10

It was a pity that we didn't have any more room for dessert. As such, we shared a mug of vanilla cream soda topped with whipped cream and butterscotch. Though we could use less whipped cream, it was a sweet, aromatic ending to our rather late dinner.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8/10

The server mistakenly served us a plate of Gumbo instead of Jambalaya at first, but it was soon rectified. Even though I wasn't expecting it, the restaurant actually decided to waive the price of the butter beer for us because of the mistake made. Thank you!
